Why does the address bar now revert to a Google search when you don't enter the ".com" suffix?

Before, when navigating to a site from the address bar I did not have to type in ".com" after the URL, but since a few weeks ago it now just brings me to a Google search. I was wondering if this was a decision on the developers end or I changed some settings on my end and didn't know it. Thanks

They may have (temporarily) changed the keyword.URL to an empty string.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Location_Bar_search

Check the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyword%2eURL
