I've just downloaded 4.0b3 and now all the bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar have icons next to them. This is annoying. How do I turn them off again, please?

You can do this by editing a file called userChrome.css inside the chrome folder of your profile folder.

If you have not edited that file before, the links above should help, but also see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration

When you edit that file, add the following lines below the line that starts with @namespace

/* hide bookmark toolbar icon images */
#personal-bookmarks .toolbarbutton-icon {
  display: none !important;
}

The above code was obtained from http://www.linnhe2.free-online.co.uk/firefox/chrome.html

Due to changes in Firefox, much of the code shown on that page will not work with Firefox 4.

Hey Mozilla dudes. Please add a way to turn off this annoying feature without having to mod a CSS file! I use my toolbar heavily and now have lost 1/2 the real estate to fluffy useless icons.

Thanks

I had the same problem on installing Firefox 4.0 (OS X 10.6.7), but found I could remove all the icons by right-clicking on the far right tip of the bookmarks toolbar (a tiny area about 1mm wide!).

This gives a menu with a "Customize..." option, which gives a window with a "Show" menu at the bottom left. Change from "Icons and Text" to just "Text", and order is restored.

On second thoughts, changing to "text" leaves you with words instead of all icons, which is a bit strange...

Instead, change to "icons", install the following add-on, and restart Firefox.
