You can unload tabs you are not actively using to help reduce memory and CPU usage, while keeping your tabs available to revisit later. When you unload a tab, it stays visible but doesn’t take up resources in the background. When you're ready to return to it, Firefox will reload the page automatically.

Starting in Firefox version 140, you can unload tabs using the tab context (right-click) menu.

Unload a single tab

You can unload a single tab. Doing this lets you prioritize particular tabs without removing them from Firefox.

To do this:

  1. Right-clickHold down the Control key while you click on the tab.
  2. Select Unload Tab.

This will cause the tab’s icon to gray out, indicating it’s unloaded. When you click the tab again, Firefox will automatically reload the page.

Unload multiple tabs

You can also unload multiple tabs at once if you want to perform wider tab management.

  1. Select the tabs you want to unload (Ctrl + Click on Windows and Linux, Command + Click on Mac).
  2. Right-clickHold down the Control key while you click one of these tabs and select Unload n Tabs.

Tip: If you often keep many tabs open, unloading unused ones can greatly improve performance.
