This article covers the situation where Firefox displays a message about crashing when you try to download files or save images.

Firefox crashes when attempting to perform a scan

With some security software, the scan after files are downloaded may cause Firefox to crash.

  1. Disable temporarily each real-time protection one at a time until that stops the crashes.
  2. Try updating the interfering program to its latest version and enable it again. If Firefox still crashes, there are two possible cases:
    • The interfering program is your only real-time protection:
Try to switch to another anti-virus program with a real-time protection. If you can't or don't want, you can disable virus scanning in Firefox with the following steps:
Warning: Disabling virus scanning may harm your computer's data or performance.
      1. Type about:config in the address bar and press EnterReturn.
A warning page may appear. Click Accept the Risk and Continue to go to the about:config page.
      2. In the Filter box, type browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone.
      3. Double-click the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone preference and change its value to false.
    • The interfering program is not your main real-time protection:
Disable the program and, if you don't need it, uninstall it.
