1. Why must the UI change from Firefox 3?? I have a 30" monitor and plenty of room for the status bar, and I want the old status bar behavior. When UI changes are forced, that's when users stick to old versions! That's what happened with WinAMP 2/3/5.

2. My diagonal resizer got stuck in a weird spot in the status bar: http://i52.tinypic.com/211s09v.jpg

3. If I customize my buttons to be Back, Forward, History, Reload, Stop, Home, then upon clicking Done the Stop button disappears.

4. The "Google Toolbar for Firefox 7.1.20101113Wb1" dropdown history doesn't function, unless you do one single click down and up for the whole process.

5. My favorite CrystalFox Qute theme doesn't work.

These are all the same bugs that I submitted as feedback for FF4b12. Time for me to go back to FF3, and I won't be upgrading til I can keep the same UI.

1) In Firefox 4 you can press F10 or use "Firefox > Customize" to make the Menu Bar and other toolbars visible and remove the check-mark on "Tabs on Top" to place the tab bar in the old position.

2) Add a Flexible Space via View > Toolbars > Customize to the left of all icons or the resize icon on the Add-on bar to align the resize icon to the right end of the Add-on bar.

3) Firefox 4.0 has a combined Reload and Stop and Go button that appears at the right end of the location bar.

  • Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
  • Move the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position at the left side of the location bar.
  • Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
  • Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

Thanks for your reply!

Regarding #1, "tabs on top" is unrelated to getting the FF3 status bar back. Why do I love the FF3 status bar? It instantly displays URLs, it doesn't crop long URLs, and it's more organized to have a dedicated place for URLs.

It sounds like the lack of a "flexible space" caused my #2 problem.

I wasn't aware of the Reload/Stop combo, but it seems different than my bug. But I can't experiment now since I've already switched back to FF3 :) Man I absolutely love FF3's UI. If only they could allow the switch to FF4 to be transparent to the user.

Regarding the "old/previous" Status Bar display of the URL: It instantly displays URLs, it doesn't crop long URLs, and it's more organized to have a dedicated place for URLs.

Install the Status-4-Evar extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/

After install,

  1. Be sure the Add-on Bar is displayed; View > Toolbars, click to check "Add-on Bar"
  2. In View > Toolbars > Customize drag any or all of the 3 items to the position you want them on the Add-on Bar:
    • Status text (this is the URL information you want)
    • Download status (will display No Downloads or number of downloads in progress)
    • Progress meter (meter of page loading)
  3. Set the options for Status-4-Evar in Tools > Add-ons > Extensions

Thanks. It looks like my points 1-3 can be fixed, but not 4-5.

You know what I wish they would realize? If the UI can be kept identical, virtually all users would have no reason to use the old version.

Do you know how many Winamp users stuck with v2.9x? A lot. Then with Winamp 5 they let you have the original UI, and finally there's no reason not to use it. I still use XP since I hate the Vista and 7 UI's. I obviously prefer to have updated software that runs faster, is more secure, and has extra functions, and there's no reason why that can't be internal while the UI stays constant--at least give users the choice. With IE7 and beyond they stopped letting you customize the topbar; for this reason I still have IE6 installed, and 12% of the Internet happens to still use it. It was released 10 years ago! In 2008 it was still the browser for 55% of companies.
