I have just upgraded to Firefox v58. I want my Tabs where they usually are for speed and minimal mouse movement - under the favourites toolbar. My add on no longer works and the fix for v57 doesn't work either. Can someone at Mozilla please fix this issue. I chose Firefox because it was customisable. Do I have to return to Safari after all these years? I am using a Mac.

Hi curlydog, did you skip over Firefox 57?

You can use custom style rules to move the tabs bar. Firefox looks for a file named userChrome.css at startup and applies those rules to the user interface. When you have 10 minutes, here's what you do:

(A) Create a new chrome folder in your profile folder. This article has the steps for that (#1, #2, and optionally #3)

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

(There's a video for Mac as well as one for Windows.)

(B) Download the following file and move it into that chrome folder:

https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css

(C) Rename that file to just userChrome.css

The next time you quit Firefox and start it up again, it should discover that file and apply the rules.

Success?

Hi jscher2000,

Thanks for this - Hooray - it actually worked!

I tried Firefox57 and hated it so I reverted to 56 until I got worried about security. When I updated yesterday it took me straight to 58. I had tried the file you mentioned but it didn't work - but you said re-name it, so I did and then it worked. Terrific. Why this doesn't just come as a regular checkbox option is beyond me.

Would you also have a solution for a more aesthetic effect - I don't like the square-ness of the tabs and would like to revert to a more soft-cornered look. Any thoughts?

Very grateful for your help on this first matter. Cheers.

In the old design (Firefox 29-56), the rounded corners were created by images. It's possible to use that technique in the new design, but I haven't seen many examples.

Examples of style recipes that give you curvy tabs I found back in December:

These tend to need customization for different themes and theme density (the normal, compact, touch setting in the Customize panel) to make them line up.

It's also possible to round just the tops of the tabs without using an image (so without the flared lower corners):

A good site to find style rule help is:

Just letting you know it worked perfectly and I also had the issue with the double .css

Thank you so much I have looked for this over a year.

A happy camper and again thank you

Here is a quick guide to have Tabs on Bottom in Windows 10. You must add a “folder and file” to your active Firefox profile folder. Follow the steps below to get Firefox to place tabs at bottom of toolbar.

1) To open your currently active profile folder a) Click on the three (3) horizontal lines icon at the upper right of the page. b) Click on “Help.” c) Click on “Troubleshooting Information.” d) Locate “Profile Folder” (left column) and click “Open Folder” (right column). If you are not on the right page, type “about:support” in the URL search line and hit <Enter>. 2) Create a new folder named “chrome” (type all small letters) 3) Create a “desktop shortcut” to the chrome folder for easier, future access should you want to add additional tab addons and want a quick route to this folder. a) Right click on the file to create the shortcut. Choose “Send To” and click “Desktop (Create Shortcut).” 4) Make sure your OS is set to show your file extensions like .txt and .css a) Open File Explorer (Windows 10) or Windows Explorer for earlier versions. b) Click on “View” and put a check mark in the box next to “Hidden Item.” 5) Now download this.css file here: https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css (Expect a popup to save the file.) a) After saving, find the file and paste this file into the new “chrome” folder you just created. This file is needed for Firefox to know to place the tabs at the bottom. b) Rename this file “userChrome.css” (Type it just like you see it here.) 6) Close Firefox and restart it. The tabs should now be on the bottom.

My company just upgraded to FF Quantum 60, and I encountered this problem. I followed the advice here, creating the userChrome.css file with the contents provided by curlydog, but it did not work.

I'm finding information that moz-box-ordinal-group is deprecated in favor of FlexBox. Is that what's going on?

EDIT: Apparently, restarting the browser by using a 'restart browser' extension was not sufficient. After closing the browser and re-launching, the tab bar is finally back where it belongs.

kittyhawk63, thank you for the awesome, amazing step-by-step directions on how to get tabs back on bottom! Very helpful for an amateur such as myself! However; it did not work for me? I'm guessing? because I'm now using Firefox Quantum? Do you OR anyone have any "updated" info so that I can get tabs back on the bottom using Firefox Quantum?

Thanks again kittyhawk63 and thank you in advance for any/all responses!

Hi fireside, this page is similar. You could use it as a double-check that you got exactly the right file name in exactly the right folder so Firefox sees and uses it:

Thank you jscher2000. I checked out your two links AND I also went back to kittyhawk63 's easy to follow instructions posted above. This time it did work, finally as I've been searching for a fix since firefox (or whomever?) decided we all wanted tabs on top!? I do believe that I didn't get the .css file copied properly into the "chrome" file { 5) a) } from kittyhawk63 's above post OR I missed the step to put a check mark in the box next to “Hidden Item" { 4) b) } also in kittyhawk63 's instructions.

Thanks to kittyhawk63 and jscher2000 and thank you to all volunteers for helping all of us!!
