Why does every Firefox update disable my Norton Toolbar, enough is enough, this is BS.

more options

EVERY time there is an update, I have to jump through hoops to get my Norton Toolbar back. I blame YOU for making me have to contact Norton, because there is no older version of Firefox on my computer when your update is done. I am about done with your product. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE as you know it will be a problem when you do the updates. Your "explanations" are BS as well.

Betting NO ONE answers back, or, if they do, it will be some "canned" answer. Waiting to see if your service is as bad as your product has become.

Sorry, I can not be nice, as this is a continuing issue YOU KNOW ABOUT AND WON"T FIX.

Sincerely; Doc514

If there is a can with the answer in it, I don't have it in my pantry.

Norton has been great about releasing updates for Firefox through LiveUpdate a few days before each new Firefox version is released. I don't know why LiveUpdate hasn't always gotten them onto your computer right away, but you shouldn't have had any serious hassles if LiveUpdate was working correctly.

Anyway, that has changed with Firefox 41. Due to a change in Firefox (which was originally going to happen in Firefox 40 but was delayed at the request of Norton and maybe some other companies), the Toolbar needs significant changes and they are still not available yet. Norton has published a statement about this: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v115161915_EndUserProfile_en_us

If you want to use an up-to-date version of Firefox that can still run the current Norton Toolbar, there is another option. You could consider using a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR) for the time being. ESR is designed for companies that require a longer cycle time between feature changes, but anyone can run it.

ESR currently is based on Firefox 38. It will get security updates over the next several months, but not get new features, so changes in Firefox 41 related to add-on compatibility will not kick in for quite a while.

Norton is likely to continue to support ESR until the new toolbar update. After that, I'm not sure what they will do because normally they only support a small range of versions.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it, and yes, this part is canned:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.3.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx41

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx41

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx41\Plugins
  • \Fx41\browser\plugins
