Now have problem under Organize. When I click on it several sections are gray. For instance New Bookmarks, New Folder, Undo, Redo and so on.

The first three should become enabled if you switch from viewing history to viewing bookmarks. Undo would normally be enabled if you modified/deleted something, and Redo if you used Undo. Does that work?

This is what your History Manager <Control>(Mac:<Command>) <Shift> H should look like. If a field is missing, right click on the bar as shown.

Not sure how to use this. Does History have to be open and if so where do you right click?

more options

You can start by opening the Library dialog using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+h
  • "Show All History" from the History menu

If an important column is missing, right-click any existing heading and a small list of available columns will appear and you can add/remove as needed. This same set of column headings is used to list Bookmarks, so some of the categories may not apply to History entries.

Will try to explain better what I have. When I go to History I have columns Organize and Views for some. When I click on Views dropdown the Name section is grayed out. I can see tags, location and most recent viewed and so on. If I right click on organize or views nothing appears. I never did see the "Show All History" section. Before I used to see a section that gave the last 7 days on the left. My laptop still gives me the history I remember. Just a problem on my pc. I tryed to use the snipping tool to show you a picture but did not know how to get it into this message. Thanks, Ed

I think it's grayed on View > Columns because you're not supposed to be able to remove it.

Could you try dragging the resizer lines between the columns in case the Name column "collapsed" to zero width?

If it's simply not there, I can think of two possibilities:

(1) Add-on conflict (2) Corrupted program files

To diagnose the first, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?

If Safe Mode is no different, then I suggest:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 40.0.3 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

I tryed to use the snipping tool to show you a picture

Taking a Screen shot; Windows > Start > search box > Snip. Select Snipping Tool.

Save the picture(s) to your desktop. Now look at the Reply box below. Press the button under it that says Browse. Now select the screen shot(s) from the desktop and load them one at a time.

Ref Views. On my laptop if I click on Views the drop down section Name is not grayed out. Have not had a chance to try your last helps.

Ran in Safe Mode. All the same. View seems OK now. Now have problem under Organize. When I click on it several sections are gray. For instance New Bookmarks, New Folder, Undo, Redo and so on.

You will have to wait a few days to get the Last 7 day folder. If the history has been cleared then you need to wait until it gets rebuild to see more folders.
