Initially when I downloaded Thunderbird I was able to change the font size to any point I wanted. They were numbered in the tool bar. This option has now been taken away and I am only able to change the font between tiny and huge. The huge is really not very big and I am limited to make more interesting and graphic emails. Is there a way to restore this versatility?

I suspect the reasoning was that a eg: 'medium' sized font is more versatile for the recipient. It leaves the font size unspecified. This means the recipients will then see your message text displayed according to the default font-size settings in their mail clients. Keep in mind that people do not all have their monitor resolutions set the same as yours, so that if you choose a larger or smaller font size because it looks "right" on your monitor, you can't be sure how it will look on the recipient's monitor. Different operating systems may also have different fonts that are auto used instead.

When you use the Formatting Bar to increase the font size, an actual font size is not put in the coding, instead it will use 'font size= +1' , so that whatever font size is used by the recipient as their prefered viewing, the +1 will make that part of the text larger based on the whatever is set as default on recipients computer.

In other words if you choose to use 12 and 14 pt, this might be too small for the recipient to read even if perfectly ok for you. If they normally use 18 and 20 then your email may seem unreadible.

Hopefully this explains the reasoning behind why the size option was altered.

Default settings are here: Menu icon > Options > Composition > 'General' tab HTML Font: Variable width This just leaves the font style unspecified, so recipient can choose to use a prefered font depending upon their OS or screen resolution or font availablity etc. Size: Medium is default There are 6 options, but Medium is a good default as previously explained as it will adapt for the majority of people depnding upon OS, screen resolution, font availability etc.

The changes you are talking about came into force in Thunderbird 45. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-45 Under 'Composition' section.

These days many people read emails on small screens - eg: smartphones or another extreme..viewed on a smartscreen or projector. These are two extremes, but setting a font size can render the email unreadible in different situations.

Maybe an addon could offer more options like a Stationary addon. I do not use it but if it is important to you, it might be worth a try. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/stationery/
