You may have a Bing add-on. If you don't want the add-on, you can disable or remove it. Alternately, if it is useful in other ways, you could check whether it has a setting for this that you could switch off.

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Add-ons

on the left side, click the Extensions category to look for Bing.

(There also are add-ons to specify what you want on a new tab, but this could lead to a battle of add-ons, so that would be a last resort.)

Thanks for your help....:-)

I have the same problem. However, I have disabled all my Add-ons/Extentions and reenabled them one at a time, and nothing turned up as the culprit. I've also looked for some sort of Bing toolbar in my add/remove programs window. I cannot figure out what the problem is. Suggestions?

I'm running Firefox 6.2 in Windows 7.

OK, I found something: I searched my computer for anything with bing in it, and found a search.ini file that I, no programmer, think is for initiating searches that specifies that something has to equal bing. So far the computer won't let me change it although I am the administrator so if you can figure that out let me and all know. As it is, when I open a new tab, I just go up to my Google bar anyway, but it's annoying.

@mrzy, where are you getting Bing: in the Firefox search box, when you search from the address bar, or in a new tab (which normally is blank)?

I'm getting bing in the new tab and I'm about ready to dump firefox also.

Microsoft may have installed a "Search Helper Extension" through one of its updates. See: Removing the Search Helper Extension and Bing Bar | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help.

In past threads, Bing has been installed through various non-Microsoft add-ons, including:

StartNow Toolbar (remove using Control Panel)
PDF Lite (remove under Extensions)
Vuze Toolbar (remove under Extensions)
Search Toolbar (remove under Extensions)
BigSeekPro / Hypercam Toolbar (remove using Control Panel)

In some cases, the detailed description for the add-on mentioned that it used Bing.

One user reported that in the Bing page, there is an option to disable Bing from appearing in blank tabs. However, this might depend on exactly which flavor of add-on you have.

Does any of that help in tracking it down?

Have followed all suggestions. Deleted the BING program and following a Search removed every item pertaining to BING did a restart and the damn Tab keep showing BING. There must be somewhere it is located on my computer but haven't been able to find the "sucker" so far...anyone have a further ideas?

Open Firefox, type " about:config " in the address bar. A notice will pop up that says your warranty may void if you continue. I clicked the button that says: "I'll be careful, I promise!". Once the list comes up, go to the filter bar and type in "bing". A list of three items will show (I don't know what they all represent) however I typed 5911488E into my search engine where it came up with that number (entire string) I deleted and viola me BING has disapeared...forever I hope.

OK, you had me up until "A list of three items will show (I don't know what they all represent) however I typed 5911488E..."

I did exactly as you said, which all worked, except I have a list of 6 items:

browser.search.order.3 - default status, string type, Bing value

{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}.default_search_url - user set status, string type, Bing value

{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}.keyword_search_url - user set status, string type, http://www.bing.com/search?pc... value

{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}.lastSearchProtectAction - user set status, string type, http://www.msn.com/?pc... value

{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}.provide - user set status, string type, bing value

{5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}.provider_name - user set status, string type, bing value

I can't delete them! I can only right click and get options to Modify, Copy, Copy Name, Copy Value, New, Reset -- all of which are useless.

So how did you delete these items??? Will you explain your statement "I typed 5911488E into my search engine where it came up with that number (entire string) I deleted and viola me BING has disappeared" for this dummy?

P.S. Argh! I hate Bing.

@contrarymari, do you have Firefox 6 or 7? In that case, try this:

In the address bar type or paste about:support and press Alt+Enter to open the Troubleshooting Information page in a new tab.

On that page, in the table labeled Extensions, look for some part of that GUID ({5911488E-9D1E-40ec-8CBB-)6B231CC153F}) to see whether it is associated with a particular add-on. If you can find it, then you can note the title and go to the add-ons pane to remove it.

orange Firefox button or Tools menu > Add-ons > Extensions

Any luck?

Edit: If the extension is not removable from the Add-ons page, then check the Windows control panel.

Thanks for the quick response, jscher2000.

Did exactly what you said, but GUID is not listed anywhere in the Extensions table (nor do I see the 5911488E...files in the ID column). I've also checked my add-ons & find no bing... But that damn bing box keeps popping up whenever I open a new tab. Ggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr...There must be a way to de-bing!

Edited to add: I'm on Firefox 7.0.1

Sorry, the GUID (globally unique identifier) is the long code starting with 5911488E. In past threads, that number was associated with the Start Now toolbar. Have you checked the Windows control panel for that one?

Many thanks, jscher2000! Your solution worked just as you said it would. It was indeed associated with the Start Now add-on. (Thanks for the clarification.) I disabled the add-on vs. remove it, but if Bing tries to get back in the game, I'll definitely remove it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you jscher2000!

Your solution coupled with the fact that my parents taught me how to read (okay teachers too :-), finally got rid of this Bing irritant! It was definitely the "Start Now Toolbar" and I got rid of it (I hope).

By the way, did I say thank you?

Hi scuba4mom, are you getting Bing in a blank tab (that is, if you press Ctrl+t) or has it taken over your address bar search, or do you have an unwanted toolbar -- or all 3 of these?

Can you open Help > Troubleshooting Information and copy and paste the list of Extensions into a reply here? (The formatting will be terrible, but don't worry about that.)
