how can I keep the tabs from changing
In previous versions of Firefox I set certain tabs that I used often and they stayed there all the time. Now the tabs keep changing, moving, and disappearing. I don't want a new tab every time I go to another web page, and I don't want a new tab every time I set a bookmark. I want to set specific tabs and have them be there every time I start Firefox. I'm now using version 3.6.10 (Windows XP Pro)

Such functionality is not included into Firefox by default. Looks like some add-on was adding it, and is now disabled, possibly for the reason of the update. Please try to look for it in Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions.
See: Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
There are also extensions that can lock tabs.
- Tabberwocky: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/14439
- Tab Mix Plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1122
If my previous version had addons, I wasn't aware of them, but they were lost when I had to have my computer overhauled. Thanks for the replies - I'll try the addons when I get time.
I finally tried Tabberwocky, but it still doesn't give me what I want. I set a couple tabs, one I locked and the other I protected. When I closed Firefox and reloaded it, the tabs were not there. I want them to be a permanent part of my Firefox window. I used to have this capability, but I don't know how I got it. I know I could tell Firefox to open with all my current settings, but then I wouldn't get my home page unless I always brought it up before shutting down.
Are you using Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear data like the browser history if you close Firefox?
Is session restore working properly?
I don't use Clear Recent History. As I said in my last post, Session Restore would start me out with the last window before I shut down. I don't want that - I want my normal home page.
The other problem with tabs is that when I go to a web site, it creates a tab in addition to the entry on the task bar. I only want tabs I've purposely put there.
What is the difference between Lock Tab and Protect Tab? Neither one keeps it there on startup.
