I noticed that FireFox downloaded a Firefox HTML Document called GnT6qZGD with a size of 0KB, during this time I had tabs open from both https://wago.io/weakauras and https://www.curseforge.com/

Scanned it with Bitdefender and it was clean and when editing in notepad it is empty and a blank page when accidentally opening it.

Then completed a full system scan and it come up as clean.

I have 2 questions,

1st, Is this still a bug in Firefox that appears to have been reported before? 2nd Should I be concerned about it?

Thank you

Hi Husker, some bizarrely named zero-byte downloads have been reported in the past. For example, in this thread about the phenomenon when it first appeared in Firefox 99:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1375411

In that case, the downloads list showed the content type as moz-safe-about, and the problem seemed to be linked to insecure images (or ads?) in HTTPS Only mode. But it hasn't come up very often so it's not clear how best to avoid it.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I do not see the file in the download history, i may have cleared it without meaning to at the time.

What is moz-safe-about and how can i check to see if it falls under the same subject?

I am concerned over the safty of my system, only just rebuilt it a couple of days ago.

Thanks

I looked at it back in the day, but don't remember the details now. Hopefully they are in the other thread. If you removed that backup from history, then you'll have to wait for another one to see what it is.

Either way, a zero byte file doesn't contain any content, so it can't be dangerous (although zero byte files with insanely long names are difficult to copy/rename/delete, so can complicate a lot of normal processes).

Thank you again.

It appears that moz-safe-about could be shown as the location of where the file may have been downloaded on further research, as I don’t see the file in the download history I cannot confirm.

I may have cleared it accidentally, but not sure.

The file is short named and is sitting in my recycle bin as I type this, will empty it and do one last scan on the system and keep an eye out for anymore.
