I recently noticed an issue after waking my MAC Book M1 (2020) from several days of sleep. Upon opening the lid, I was met with a system warning about low memory. Further investigation revealed that ThunderBird was using over 100G of memory.

Just a few days ago, I had updated my MAC to Sonoma 14.0, and last week ThunderBird was updated to version 115.3.0. Both were significant version upgrades, and I'm unsure where the problem lies.

I haven't installed any additional extensions or plugins, as shown in the attached screenshot. However, I did notice some components listed in the debug information, and I'm not sure why there's an inconsistency.

I will continue to monitor this issue to see if it reoccurs. For now, I'm just reporting this as a single instance along with my system information, hoping it's an isolated case.

I recently noticed an issue after waking my MAC Book M1 (2020) from several days of sleep. Upon opening the lid, I was met with a system warning about low memory. Further investigation revealed that ThunderBird was using over 100G of memory. Just a few days ago, I had updated my MAC to Sonoma 14.0, and last week ThunderBird was updated to version 115.3.0. Both were significant version upgrades, and I'm unsure where the problem lies. I haven't installed any additional extensions or plugins, as shown in the attached screenshot. However, I did notice some components listed in the debug information, and I'm not sure why there's an inconsistency. I will continue to monitor this issue to see if it reoccurs. Thanks for reporting this. I have removed some of your personal account information - in the future before posting you might what to edit your troubleshooting information to prevent exposure of your private information.

Did you happen to notice whether there was also very high CPU? Do you use the Mac address book in Thunderbird? If this happens again, you might try disabling one or more calendars.

Note also, Thunderbird now has 115.3.1.

Regarding the Mac address book, how do I disable that feature?

I've updated to the latest version and will continue to monitor this issue.

1. open Mac System preferences 2. type "privacy" 3. click privacy settings 4. click contacts 5. at the bottom click the lock and provide your password 6. uncheck the box for thunderbird 7. restart thunderbird

I have already turned off the contact feature, and even after enabling troubleshooting mode, it still consumed over 30GB of memory. Do you have any further suggestions?

Two items

Broken folders sometimes cause memory issues. Right+click your most refrequenztly used folders and do properties > repair.

If you are using Unified folders:

  • Install https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/unified-folders-debugging/
  • If you do not see the "Unified Folders" heading in the folder pane, then click on "..." next to "New messages", click "Folder Modes", enable an additional folder mode to force the "Unified Folders" heading to appear
  • in the folder pane, next to the "Unified Folders" heading, click on ⋮ three vertical dots, do not do "Reset Unified Folders"
  • click Debugging Info > click Copy to Clipboard and save the clipboard somewhere
  • click Close.
  • in the Unified Folders heading click on ⋮ three vertical dots, and do "Reset Unified Folders". (DO THIS LAST)

Does either of these things help?

For your three gmail, unsubscribe the "All Mail" folders. I doubt it will cause the problem to go away, but it may help some.

If these are all imap accounts, you might try creating a new profile.

I have removed all Gmail (including Workspace) accounts and, after recreating them, I now only sync the most recent 30 days of emails to my local device, and have disabled downloading all mail folders. I am currently observing whether this issue has been resolved.

No, I am referring to memory, not disk space. As shown in the screenshot I attached, it displays that 104.41GB of memory is being used. I am using an Apple Air M1 with 16GB of physical RAM and a 512GB SSD. I suspect that OSX is utilizing swap space and compression techniques to enable the usage of over 100GB of memory.
