Firefox 108 does not let me close tabs

I am on Manjaro Linux and installed the update to Firefox 108. The result is an unwieldy, unhelpful interface that is the opposite of the efficiency claimed by Mozilla. I can't close tabs, I can't even easily find them. The top bar gives me two controls with identical function: both show "Save to Pocket" and "Customise toolbar..."

Could you tell me how I can close tabs, please? If I can't, then I'll be adding to an endless history, probably making the browser slower and slower.

Who asked for these changes? In what way are they they helpful to me?

Do you use the userChrome.css file? If not, try to click "Customise toolbar..." and click the Restore Defaults button.

@TyDraniu, It's not about restoring defaults. FF 108 has a completely different lay-out from earlier versions. I can get used to a new lay-out and a new way of doing things, but FF108 reduces functionality and options. It is the opposite of Mozzila's claim to improve efficiency.

AFAIK there wasn't any layout changes in 108.

@TyDraniu, FF108 shows no tabs, i.e. I can see only one at a time and switching from one to another requires me to go to Customize Toolbar, which does show a bar of tabs. This is what I call a lay-out change. If this is the only way to switch tabs, it's a reduction of useful functionality. Further, I have no three-bar icon that gave me a menu, from which I could acsess Settings. I can still reach Settings, but only when I display the menu bar with Alt+F.

If you tell me these are not changes in 108, then something's gone wrong and I guess, I'll have to try to purge FF and re-install. Would that be your advice?

Could you test in Firefox's Troubleshoot Mode? In that mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

Yes, it's something on your side, but reinstall won't help you.

I'm not very Linuxy. Is this Wayland or something? Can you attach a screenshot of the issue?
