I Love ThunderBird...its by far the best mail program....I just updated to the latest version 68.1 and everything came across just fine and i was able to get one of my very important add ons....Import/Export tools. However the other vital add on Theme and font changer is not available for this version. The size of the menus is so small as to be almost impossible to read on a small laptop. Any chance of an updated version the the Theme and Font Add On? Thanks

See the attached pictures which show TB with the preference set to the default (-1.0), 1.25 and 1.45. Choose a value that works best with your screen resolution and eyesight. I think it's clear that the value affects the fonts for the menus, message bodies, and the folder and threads panes.

Many thanks to sfhowes for the explanation about how to change the font size in the menu panes etc. Is there something similar for the font colour? I used to have them all in a dark blue which I find easier on the eyes than black on white.

If you mean the colour of the text in the Folder and Threads Panes, this userChrome.css should work:

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul");

/* Folder Pane font */
#folderTree > treechildren {
  font-size: 10pt !important;
  font-family: Verdana !important;
  color: #000062 !important;
}

/*  Threads Pane font */
.tree-rows {
    font-size: 10pt !important;
    font-family: Verdana !important;
    color: #000062 !important;
}

You can modify or remove any of the three font parameters.

Create a subfolder of the profile folder, name it chrome, create a new text file in chrome and save it as userChrome.css, Save as Type: All Files *.*, copy the above content into the css file.

For years now, at every update, you do away with an easy way to increase the font size in Thunderbird. Why? This should be a built in feature that does not rely on a third party add in. The solution above did work but it was hard to find and an unnecessary nuisance. Instead of giving us useless features we don't need, why not allow more control on basics like this?

I totally agree with this. Listen up!!

On a Mac here. 1.25 actually made things smaller. -1.25 made some things larger. But the list of folders still has a tiny font. How do I make the folder names larger?

I got it fixed. Thanks anyway.

HI, I did the below and it worked, but now the font is too big. I cannot get back in to the editor because the "warning" window does not show the "OK" button for me to click, because the font/screen of the warning window is now so big. Help!

For Windows, open Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor, or click the 3-bar icon at the upper right, Options/Options/Advanced/General/Config. editor, right-click the preference layout.css.devPixelsPerPx, Modify, and enter a value of 1.20 or 1.25 or 1.5 or 2.0... </blockquote>

The remedy is to close TB, open the prefs.js file in the profile folder with a text editor, and edit this line:

user_pref("layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", "2.25");

Change the value to 1.0 or 1.25, save the file, and restart TB.

A thousand times yes. This program is getting more and more like the Chrome browser, which means users have little or no control (unless they want to experiment with something like "flags", which means, really, you need some programming knowledge).

All this important adjustments should be in a GUI. What is this? 1995?

How many people want to play with a CSS file to adjust font size, which is probably the NUMBER ONE adjustment anyone makes?

Few, is the answer.

This. A thousand times this.

From what I can tell you can't even *see* the current font size in the GUI. That seems.... odd. I just installed Thunderbird (replacement for discontinued WLM on a new PC), and generally like it, but there are a couple of head-scratchers. When composing an email the font looks too large; though when I receive the email on the other end it looks OK. So it's hard to tell if I'm zoomed wrong (zooming doesn't seem to work), or if I'm actually using large font size. Would be good to be able to see and adjust the font size on the fly right in the GUI, like pretty much every other computer application that exists since the 1980's.

I have TB 68.1.1 64-bit on Windows 10. Trying to increase font size in message subjects, tabs, and toolbars per your instructions, but there is no "preference" in the edit menu. Is it 'hidden'? if so, any way to 'unhide' it? Thanks for help, Gail

Just unreal that this has to be done via what is, for many people, a hack.

Guessing TB is losing users by the bucketful. I'm in search and replace mode myself.

It's 2020, people. This should be WAY up in the priority pecking order.

I am on a mac and can make the font smaller with your fix but not any larger. Also, got hit with the dark mode and tiny font today without any warning. I am really having trouble reading my e-mail. Got the white background back after hunting around to find the fix (why not include that with the what's new info?). And really need a way to easily fix the font size. The add-ons keep vanishing with the upgrades. Why not go back a couple of versions so that people can read their e-mail? Can you not add the WeTransfer feature to an older version? In this case newer is definitely not better.

If you changed the preference and now can't open or view TB, revert to the default setting by following the instructions above:

user_pref("layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", "2.25");

No such line in that file.

When I try to open TB, it asks me to "Choose a user profile" in a pop-up window, that has never happened before, there is only 1 file, the default file. Sorry I did not mention this earlier. Why has this happened since it was updated? I am the only user of this email, thanks, Jim

There is no file user_pref("layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", "2.25");

I seriously need to access my emails & I have no idea what has happened! I did absolutely nothing to change this & now all my emails are gone, all my financial business receipts, travel & business expenses seemed to have gone poof & I have no idea what to do.

Open this location:

and state the names of the folders in Profiles.

Why in God's Name do you do this [Deleted] with the fonts every time?

You call this an update? I call it a major screw-up! The fonts are so tiny they are unreadable, and adjusting layout.css.dev.....doesn't work!!

You should NEVER release another edition of Thunderbird without menu font control. It's NOT WORTH IT!!

I had contributed $$$ in the past but I am so sick of this [Deleted] - every dam release it's like this, and I'm done! Not a penny for Mozilla, not for Thunderbird and not for Firefox. Just [Deleted] already, I think of you like a patient on life support who needs the plug pulled.....

What in the [Deleted] is wrong with you people?

Respectfully... this company would be better served to have staff working on fixing the font problem than monitoring and correcting the form and language of responses to the font problem in the forum.

What a useless comment.

Mozilla/Thunderbird has been doing this now for years. They issue an update which basically disables the application for so many of us and then they beg for money, and after they've so negatively affected so many users, they do nothing, and then they continue to release defective product. Screw that, I'm done.

You won't have to worry about me posting here again.

Mozilla needs to shut down - its a dysfunctional organization, and it's outlived any useful purpose it may have once had.
