Thanks but I have no software like that only a basic Toshiba system

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Make the changes you want. After, Close Firefox.

Open Firefox Again in Safe Mode. Is the problem still there?

Are any of the network.proxy user set (bold) or locked if you check them on the about:config page?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Did you check for other causes of problems with prefs?

No the safe mode did not work tried couple of times

the about config the only bold was

network proxy type modified interger 5

this is about out of the depth of a 70 year old might just put up with changing it each time i go in

terrific prompt response thanks unless some one has a simple answer
