Ready to dump my favorite browser because of FirefoxCP web content sucking CPU no matter what I do to fix it

more options

Since a recent upgrade (to the new firefox) FirefoxCP web content is out of control sucking up over 100% cpu often on Macbook pro

Googled it but no way to fix this mega bug. Ready to dump Firefox unless you hopefully give me some tips. Thanks in advance.

Even if I have just a handful of tabs open the sucker is hogging my system and itself. Firefox has become completely useless.

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

I'm a computer scientist, so, an educated user. Do you have confidence that this reset will solve the problem? Why? Do you have concrete cases that this has solved the problems? Any threads on this webpage that I could read to get confidence that a reset will fix it? many thanks.

more options

Well first, what do you mean by "FirefoxCP"? and yes, resets fix a vast of issues that users have with Firefox, without forcing tons of troubleshooting

more options

Sorry meant Firefox Quantum. It's been a disaster with this CP frikin process killing CPU. Have you ever heard such a case? and reset fixing it? There are a ton of articles with people complaining about this. So it's a common problem with new versions of FF.

more options

you keep saying "CP", what do you mean.

You've given next to no information about what's happening, or your profile / computer information, so yes, barring you providing more details, try a refresh

more options

And after CPU hog, even ctrl Q doesn't kill FF and u have to kill the two processes (CP and FF) via task mgr.

more options

I wrote FireFox Quantum 60.0.2 OSX Sierra MacbookPro. Process names: Firefox FirefoxCP Web Content.

I am not thinking maybe you never heard of this process name: "FirefoxCP Web Content" have you? Is this a new problem for you?

more options

You didn't clarify you were talking about processes, clarity is important.

Can you post your about:support data? Did you try a refresh?

more options

Yes I refreshed it. Just got done refreshing. I have a couple of tabs open. None of them are downloading anything I know of. 4 CP processes are running hogging about 2GB of memory. CPU is split between them.

Thanks. Here you go

refresh seems to have helped for now (not 100% sure). thank you.

Didn't take the sucker long to get on its knees again. A day or two after refresh CPU at over 100%. Since refresh I have the default 4 CP Web Contents running. Firefox process itself over 100%. Nothing fancy is happening. Got a handful of tabs open that are sitting still. Something is wrong with this browser's design - whatever happened architecturally in latest versions sucks! It was never a process hog before.

here we go again - almost nothing open in firefox and the sucker is sucking CPU like there's no tomorrow.

Also in all these cases, Control-Q no longer kills the whole process.
