right, so yesterday I panicked because one of my bookmark folders went missing, I freaked out, restored to the previous day (which made my browser crash), and then found it dragged into some other folder, hidden away, so all that was usless.

however, none of my bookmarks will appear when I start typing the url in the address bar - what am I supposed to do to bring it all back? I haven't changed any of the settings (unless restoring bookmarks did so without my knowledge), so I haven't a clue.

And bookmarks are there accessible from your bookmark toolbar? Did you tried to export and import them?

Are you using still same firefox profile? Check it by locating your firefox data folder and checking bookmarks files: https://www.google.com/search?q=firefox+bookmarks+location

what's a 'firefox profile'? I only go this account to access forums, I don't sign in to my browser.

all I did was restore my bookmarks to the previous day. the bookmarks are still available, but I can't see them appear as suggestions in the address bar when I start typing the url, or indeed the keyword. I have to either type in the whole url, or google it, or open all of my bookmarks and find it trough there.

also, I note that my last bookmarks file, for 27.02, as per 'restore' section in the browser, is 3.9MB - 29854 items, whereas the the remaining, earlier ones, are all 6.2MB, with one for 26.02 having 31027 items. what are these files and where are they?

why did restoring my bookmarks only one day back almost halved the file size and cut some (over 1000) bookmarks. why can I not reverse the 'restoration'?

extraordinary.

am I imagining this, or the expert 'community' couldn't care less?

Did you make sure these suggestions are still enabled?

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, and search suggestions. You can set what suggestions show When you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar via Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security

  • Address Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

A profile in Firefox is the collection of settings, customizations, add-ons, and other personalizations that a user has made or installed into their copy of Firefox.

I thought I made it clear in my original post that "I haven't changed any of the settings", so yes, all three options remain ticked.

there is only one profile folder in my Firefox folder, so I'm assuming it's all the same profile.

what exactly am I looking for when I "verify integrity"? I can see that "Table moz_bookmarks has 29892 records", which, again, makes me wonder why have I lost in excess of 1000 bookmarks after this botched "restoration", which I presume is impossible to reverse.

I don't quite understand the other two links either, I'm not a developer.

so is there a fix to this? do I have to reinstall the whole thing, or am I supposed to just put up with it and talk to myself here?

Hi, as Mozilla Firefox Support is a all Volunteer effort it depends on who is around as we are all over the world, and their knowledge of the issue.

For example I am not a Mac person. So I am hoping this quick fix try you will have the knowledge to know where the folders are that I do not. Please give this Windows fix a try but you need find the folders on your Mac: uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 58.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

What item counts do you see if you check the bookmark backups?

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

I appreciate what help I can get, even if I have to repeat myself (2/28/18, 5:54 AM):

Anyhow.

when I go to the 'bookmarkbackups' folder in my Firefox profile folder, the earliest file is from 27.02.2018 - size 4.1MB - 29854 items. (file sizes in MB are slightly less when you view them throught he 'restore' menu, 3.9MB to be precise). the last one, for 13.03.2018, is 3.9MB with 29924 items. so none of the pre-restoration backup files remain.

I take it they are generated automaticaly, and the older ones are replaced by more current?

Thankfully I copied the backup file for 26.02.2018 and saved it elsewhere just in case - its size is 6.5MB and it has 31027 items. So there's still over a 1000 bookmarks missing since I restored them.

However, the file extention isn't .json, it .jsonlz4 - can I still restore from this file directly, via 'choose file', or can I only restore from files that are listed in the menu?
