Hello,

Recent changes with Java have left my Firefox Browser unable to print UPS labels using thermal printer at UPS Campus Ship Website: https://www.campusship.ups.com/cship/create

Google Chrome, and IE work fine, but when the thermal print window pops open on Firefox- I get no button to select printer and print. This machine is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

My other machine... running Windows 10- Firefox operates and prints fine. I would use this machine to print but it is in another location than my daily package printing machine.

If you have any tricks I'm glad to hear them.

Thanks, -RobbyV

The Java plugin just did have a security update, but the site's system requirements page doesn't mention requiring the Java plugin so I'm not sure that's relevant: https://www.campusship.ups.com/conten.../help_system_reqmts.html. Did you notice any other strange behaviors since the update??

I'm not personally familiar with this page but if it launches a pop-up window that doesn't let you print in the usual ways, you may have two other options:

(1) If the label is a PDF displayed in the Adobe Acrobat plugin, there should be a way to call up the plugin's menu bar to use its Print button. That will give you the most accurate results with a PDF.

(2) If the label is a web page, not a PDF, you can use Ctrl+p to call up Firefox's print dialog.

There also is a setting you can change to modify how the toolbar appears in pop-up windows if you like. This will show the full toolbar instead of use the address.

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the search box above the list, type or paste feat and pause while the list is filtered

(C) Double-click the dom.disable_window_open_feature.toolbar preference to switch it from false to true. This will disable sites from hiding the toolbar on new pop-up windows.

The only downside of that change is that some sites may size their popups in a way that doesn't allow enough room for the full toolbar, and therefore some content at the bottom of the popup window may be cut off. Hopefully not an issue for sites you visit.

Are there any error messages in the Web Console ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Web Developer) about blocked items?

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions do not block content. There is security software that can interfere with loading content, so check that as well.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Firefox 42+ has a Tracking Protection feature that is enabled by default in Private Browsing mode. When you are in private browsing mode then Firefox can show a shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar that some content is affected.

You can disable this feature in "Options/Preferences > Privacy" or via the about:privatebrowsing page that get when you open a New Private Window.

  • Options/Preferences > Privacy: "Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows"
