Y'day updated Vista laptop to FF 40.0.232, Flash to 18.0.232. BBC Iplayer radio failed to open recorded programs, (but did play current broadcast). This suggested that maybe Flash was the problem but refused to re-install previous version Tried to turn back using system restore but now have permanent XPCOM error and no working browser on that pc. This is written on an old XP pc with Chrome browser. Will I have to delete and reload FF with attendant risk of losing passwords etc or is there any other option?

Firefox comes in two or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And one folder in the profile of each user on the computer.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user folders would not be effected.

check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drive drivers

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Download Firefox Full Version For All languages And Systems {web link} Save the file. Then;

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

• Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox folders by adding .old to them.

Now run the full installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.

FredMcD: thanks Your reply looks very helpful. It pulls together several strands that I had found on a search and is much clearer. FF version above was mistyped, should be 40.0.3 I'll have a go and post the result.

I don't have any technical solutions to your problem, but will add that the BBC media sites are terrible. From the U.S., I run into trouble on those all the time. I often have to click on several links to get the players to load, and if it fails, I keep refreshing the various pages until the player loads. Some days I just give up, and then the next day things work again. They also like changing the sites subtly every few months for some bizarre reason.

Just a reload of Firefox as suggested has fixed the problem and all my bookmarks, passwords etc are as was! Many Thanks. BTW my vista laptop dates from when I did not have broadband so is way behind on most updates. I did not try graphics driver updates since it now works, even on the BBC ! I believe in not fixing it if it ain't broke! ( I know... but I do update antivirus and firewalls. Too many friends/colleagues in the past have had fatal crashes after a system update.)
