Not enough disk space to download new messages, archived 3500 messages and still won't download.
I had over 5500 emails in my inbox, finally I got the message that there is not enough dick space. I made a new folder under Archives for 2014 and moved 3400 emails into there. I deleted countless others and emptied the trash folder on all of my emails. This one has 1979 left in the inbox and will not download any new messages.

Compacting should be a regular maintenance task that you do. Please read the attached article on how to maintain your email system.

Actually, if the default is in place of "automatic compact", there should be no need for such regular maintenance. That's been in place for several years now.
If an automatic compact isn't working correctly for a user then a bug should be filed, rather than only doing some one-off remedy

More than one user has recently gotten a "not enough disk space" warning. There might be an actual bug happening. Two recent reports are

That may be true Wayne. How is that working for this user?
There is more to the article than Compacting like not using the Inbox for permanent storage.

We do not know that it (I assume you mean compact) is, or that it is not. Are you asking me because you do not know what to ask?
IMO we are in a stage of "not enough information yet", i.e. questions need to be asked. And in fact, as I implied with the bugs I cited, we do not know whether the user even has a data problem. But I can tell you if there is a data issue then going through http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird will likely kill any chance of answering any further questions in that area, except whether Frank has automatic compact enabled at Tools | Options | Advanced | Network.
