after updating to firefox 29 and then 29.0.1, the cpu usage that firefox are using are insane,

it ranges between 50%-100% cpu usage.

and it happens even on normal non flash tab,

besides even if the site is using flash, i am using flash block and adblock plus,

so anykind of flash material wont play or uses cpu.

please fix this ASAP, because firefox has now gone from useable to resource hog,

oh and i don't like the new look, because firefox has become more similar to chrome on User interface,

and i don't use chrome, because i don't like the UI, and now firefox tried to be chrome twin ?

i think that's all, thanks in advance.

i agree with what you are suggesting,

but you might want to simplify your suggestion,

because at first its clear, but from the middle it became too complicated for average user to understand what you are trying to say.

and i kinda confused by your reply, but it is probably because i have a bad stomach ache (something i eat caused it), and can't think straight.

so should i mark it as solved ? or you would do it and then do what you wanna do with this thread ?

oh btw, the firefox ram usage is kinda high with only 2 tab open, is that normal or not, btw the firefox RAM usage is 310KB, with only the gmail and this tab opened.

@jrh_engineering : Well version 31 - actually version 32 - exists now, so perhaps you could try it with a setup similar to the one I specified above. It's not hard to reproduce. Then if you are still getting the problem while I am not, obviously something odd is going on that might reasonably be revealed by starting with a minimal setup and building it up in logical steps.

I never imply in comments, or normally even think, that people having problems are being stupid, although further comments like yours might induce me for the first time to make an exception. I have had the same problem myself, and illustrated above how I solved it. With 35 years of software engineering experience behind me, I can tell you that if you encounter a problem like this, you strip the software down to the bare essentials and then build up again systematically, piece by piece, until a fault emerges, which is what I did.

In this case, I took care to destroy all previous Firefox profiles, as well as uninstalling the program completely, before starting clean. I also started experimenting with the Nightly Builds, with separate profiles. This was carried out on a bog-standard dual-core HP laptop and culminated in running my standard set of add-ons given above.

Without knowing exactly what add-ons you have installed, it is not possible to duplicate your problem exactly anyway, but then that isn't necessary. The point is that I have had a similar problem and have taken some trouble to demonstrate (a) how I solved it in my particular case, and (b) that there is probably no CPU bug in the current version of Firefox for Mozilla to try to find; the problem most likely lies in an add-on. I was trying to be helpful, and I resent your remark about my comments, which in fact are very pertinent to this issue and along lines similar to those suggested by Mozilla staff.

If you make a genuinely clean installation of the latest version following the guidelines given, which shouldn't be too difficult for one with your great experience, you should be able to isolate the add-on(s) which are almost certainly the cause of your problem, without adding unnecessarily to the workload of the Mozilla engineers. If you really think you have found a fundamental browser bug and want to contribute rather than carp, install a nightly build, see if you can reproduce the fault on that, and report the results to the Mozilla team via the nightly-build bug-tracker channels. See John99's remarks and procedures just now for the correct approach.

Hi, In response to this escalation, is it safe to summarize that this thread is a question about the performance of Firefox with different extensions/addons that changed from one version to the next with no configuration changes?

As well as there are some PCs that have different performances with similar set ups (Adblock, flashblock and noscript on various windows os to name a few) thank you for the testing. In order to move forward with this issue, it may be wise to submit a performance bug with the test case: https://quality.mozilla.org/docs/bugz.../#performance and be sure to include the test case mentioned. Each may need a different test case.

Send performance data to improve Firefox as already suggested.

DM789, with the original posting and profile, are you still seeing this kind of performance in version 31?

Just my 2c on testcases

Is it a bit of a leap to expect users to try making reduced test cases ?

I somehow suspect few of the users reporting this issue have even tried browsing with webmail tabs closed and AdBlockPlus off never mind trying browsing on only a single website.

I would be pleasantly surprised to learn I am wrong.

As preparation, maybe take a step backwards first, and walk forward in stages Possibly especially in threads with multiple readers and users contributing it may be

  1. A good first step to agree does anyone see issues when using just a single site, (Preferably a named public site, needing no login or registration and available internationally)
  2. And as a second step do others then also agree that issue.
  3. If so then we have a candidate target for generating a reduced test case, with good likely hood it will be reproducible test case

I have possibly seen some issues myself but I am nowhere near being able to reproduce reliably on even named multiple websites or known sessionstore.js sets.

edit correction to what I see Sorry my comment above is slightly misleading. I am possibly seeing high memory issues, and at that time may be high cpu or very slow performance I am not seeing high CPU use without the high memory

lately i rarely uses my pc for browsing, because i've been using my android for browsing because i play GTA V on PS3 (couch) more for now,

but when i do use my PC, i see that the cpu usage is a lot better, with a rare spike,

so for me overall the issue is almost fixed.

but since lately i rarely use my pc, i don't think that i can be a good example.

@John99 : yeah in the past (when i first having this issue), i've tried using firefox with minimal plugins and also tried disabling all plugins, and the sites that i visited is not a lot, mostly its the same sites (tech news site, manga reading site, gaming news site).

summary : for me the issue is not that severe anymore, but i can't speak for everyone else that also has this issues.

Thanks for that reply DM789.

Glad to hear your problem is a lot better now.

His thread is getting rather long and as such starting to becoming difficult to follow. Also of course it is getting old having started as Fx29 problem but we are now on Fx31

I am trying to consider what the best course of action may be to move forward from here.

My proposal would be to close down this thread as solved as it works for you now, and you are the thread owner, it is your problem the thread was to solve.

But I will not actually lock the thread I will allow anyone to make very short posts but only for Cross Linking purposes

  • Cross linking similar problems
Just stating they have an issue and have started at thread that any of us can follow.
  • Cross linking a solution to High Cpu usage
Again that will be useful because a solution that works for one person may not work for everyone, but it should work for some others.

In the new threads if we try to get users to report issues that are likely to be suitable for investigation and possibly developing so that a bug may be filed and fixed then we should be able to identify and fix issues.

Possibly rather than one single issue there are multiple issues, different users may have slightly different issues, and some users may themselves have problems with more than one cause.

Turn the thread into almost a mini news feed on High CPU usage. Instead of trying to trawl through the site by browsing or searching for issues related to High CPU usage subscribe to and follow this one thread.

Methods of Subscribing

  • Emails (option towards top right)
Click on QUESTION TOOLS v -> GET EMAIL UPDATES
  • rss Feed (It really can be used as an old fashioned news feed option towards top right)
Click on QUESTION TOOLS v -> SUBSCRIBE TO FEED
Alternatively click the Firefox icon for the feed
  • Mark one Eyeball !!
Manually bookmark it and remember to pass by every now and again, maybe after each of the regular updates to Firefox (every six weeks) link /questions/1003966?page=3

It may be that some News sites Magna sites etc do not play well with Firefox for some reason. One reason for your own issues may be the known issues with AdBlockPlus I know that is not directly a high CPU issue. It is a memory issue, but that may not be unconnected with slowness and increased CPU usage

DM789,

I Hope you are feeling better !

If you are now worrying about memory issues I suggest you start a new thread about that issue then post back to mention you have done so.

There are many factors that can affect memory use. Probably it is of more interest to know whether or not Firefox is working ok. If you have 4GB Ram or more and Firefox is using 1/3GB you probably would not expect Firefox to have problems because of the level of memory use. I have previously posted a link to this article it may be helpful

I've had this problem for many months and just managed to fix it. I am by no means a computer expert but I can tell you how fixed it. For about a month when I've been using my browser I would run windows resource manager to watch my cpu usage, network usage. disk usage, ect. I noticed that the cpu usage spiked when I played flash player while buffering. If the video wasn't buffering when I played it the cpu usage was about half. I also noticed that when my laptop was running on batteries I didn't have the same cpu spikes, albeit it ran a little slower. So I went into my control panel and checked my performance/power settings. I have my computer set to high performance because it's plugged in most of the time. So checked the advanced settings for both high performance profile and power saver profile to see the difference in the processor power management. In power saving profile the processor power management cooling policy was set to passive for both plugged in and on battery. For the maximum processor state was set to around 60% for both plugged in and battery. The high performance profile the cooling management policy is set to active for plugged in and 100% for maximum processor state. So all I did was set the cooling policy to passive for both battery and plugged in, and I set the maximum processor state to 60% for battery and plugged in. This solved the problem for me and my computer only seems to run a smidge slower on certain sites. I don't get the cpu spikes I used to and Ive had no problems with streaming video. I have no idea if this is a problem with the os, my browser, flash player, or computer hardware... probably a combination of them all. Hope this helps

I have the same/similar issue. Had to raise a separate question in order to register. I am on 32.0.3. The issue happens several hours after starting and browsing various sites and maybe sleep/wake cycles have an effect too. The CPU hog may or may not be related to what site you had been to but stays on even when you close all the tabs, see the picture below; 25% with only the one tab to post a question to this site.

I know the intermittent problem like this may be difficult to debug but this happens quite regularly, so shouldn't be that difficult to reproduce.

Many thanks, Lev772

Firefox was eating 52%-80%

I downgraded to 28 and opened it in 32 bit mode. (Get info on Firefox and check off the 32 Bit mode box)

Now, Firefox is only using between 9%-25%. I didn't have to remove plugins.

See if it works for you
