opened Thunderbird and could not get to the inbox or any other folders—it shows only the start page (not donations page)
I opened Thunderbird and could not get to the inbox or any other folders—it shows only the donations page. This is not okay. I do donate. Not much, not too often, but I do. However, if I open e-mail client and want to use it, then this is not a right moment to asking for donations. Or I should be able to do what I came to do and deal with donations issue later.
If you want users to pay for Thunderbird, it is of course okay, but please let us know in advance, give some time to mull it over and then clear the sheets. It is most inconvenient when this kind of issue is raised when you actually need to do something. And the message is unclear - how often and how much I need to donate (pay) in order to get to use Thunderbird without interruptions?
Thank you in advance and I do like Thunderbird. Just not this approach.
PS. Sorry for my bad English, not native speaker. PPS. Or, maybe this is some error that donations page does not "go away"?

When you start up Thunderbird that is the default message displayed in the Message Pane area. It's not just about donations, it's also got information on how to get to a 'Support Page', how to offer Help, How to report a bug, what to do if something crashed and other information. I'm not sure why you think the message is unclear. It could not be more clear - it is a page of various information with various links to relelvant parts of information.
how often and how much I need to donate (pay) in order to get to use Thunderbird without interruptions? I presume that was a rhetorical question.
The Start up Message in itself is normal and has been like it for eons. The message can be switched off:
- Settings > General
- Uncheck the checkbox 'When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area.'
However, the Message is not the relevant issue.
What do you mean by: I opened Thunderbird and could not get to the inbox or any other folders
Once you have clicked on a folder in the left Folder Pane, you should see the Message List display list of emails in the selected folder and that 'Donations' etc message should disappear as soon as you select an email to read. It would only reappear the next time you start Thunderbird assuming you have not disabled it.
Are you saying you start up Thunderbird and then clickon/select a folder but the contents of the folder are not displaying - the Message List is not visible and that 'Start page/Donations etc' message will not disappear so you never have any access to any folder and therefore cannot see any emails?
What version of Thunderbird are you using ? Where did you get the Thunderbird download from eg: was it the official website: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/ Or somewhere else ?

I do notice that the 'Message' seems to be all the way to the top of the Message List area. That is unusual. Usually, the 'Message Pane' only goes part way up that area so at least part of the Message List area is still displaying above it, but your view seems to go up to the column headers - is it possible to grab the top of the 'Message' as it is the 'Message Pane' and move it down a bit ?
Thank you! Sorry for being unclear.
I am using Kubuntu. Yes, it was official download.
You said: Once you have clicked on a folder in the left Folder Pane, you should see the Message List display list of emails in the selected folder and that 'Donations' etc message should disappear as soon as you select an email to read.' The thing is that Donations message doe not disappear. Clicking on different folders does not help. I have used Thunderbird for years and never experienced anything like that.
So, obviously, problem is somewhere else. I thought it may be Thunderbird's new policy. It was stupid of me.
Thank you again! Yesterday I tried restart etc. Also clicking on different folders. Today, starting my computer, is everything back to normal. I do apologize for incorrect assumptions. I did not need to move "Message" pane. In summary: it is solved, at least for now. If problem recurs, I try moving Message pane. Thank you very much for your kind help.

At the time of these postings, a bug in the conversations add-on caused the Start Page to take the entire message list and message display.
