Can receive but not send messages. Thunderbird requests the SMTP password, which is entered correctly but refused. Can access via webmail OK so passwords, etc are good. Have checked SMTP settings with ISP provider - all good.

There's a troubleshooting article here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Connection_errors_-_SMTP It would help if you could follow through the connection sequence and find out where it is failing. At the moment, on the basis of your description of the problem, there are so many things that might be going wrong that it's hard to know where to begin.
