Three days ago Firefox 4.01 spontaneously dit not display my iGoogle page correctly any more - large portions missing. Other browsers display the page correctly. Uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it again - no changes. Eventually uninstalled Firefox. Then there occured various crashes, first of the Nvidia controller (that had given me problems before!), then of the entire computer. Eventually I put the system back into the state of three weeks ago - Firefox 4.01 was suddenly back but did not start. Now I can't uninstall Firefox anymore.

Please do the following.

  1. Use Internet Explorer 8 or 9 to Download Firefox 4.0.1. Choose "Save" when you see the prompt and save it to your desktop. (Do not choose "Run")

  2. Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).

  3. Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

  4. Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.

Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

After you complete the installation, go to the Plugins Check page and update those where necessary.

If you still have that problem after reinstalling Firefox then try to clear the cache and the Google cookies and make sure that one of the extensions isn't causing the problem.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I have found the solution. The problem is Avast!. Open FireFox->Gadgets and disable Avast! Webrep. Restart browser, problem solved.

I tried this but it did not work. Then I tried clearing the cache and cookies as suggested by Cor-el suggested below. The problem was with my Avast Webrep extension. For Firefox 4 follow these steps: Click on the Firefox button in the top left corner> Select Add-ons> Click on Extensions on the left> Disable Avast Webrep> Select the Restart Firefox option when it appears> Problem solved.
