Sound OK in Fx 3.6.8 SUSE Linux so this is probably a Ubuntu config problem
I'm now at Firefox 3.6.12. If I start Firefox with Javascript enabled and YouTube and LoudCity in the startup tabs then YouTube will play an initial clip with sound. LoudCity will be playing without sound. If I then try to launch http://archlinux.ca/archcon2010/videos/day2/part201.ogg, I get no sound.
If I start Firefox with Javascript disabled then YouTube does not start. I think I get sound on Loud City. In any case I turn off Loud City, launch http://archlinux.ca/archcon2010/videos/day2/part201.ogg and get sound.
If I stop the ogg video, enable Javascript and restart YouTube then YouTube plays without any sound. I can restart the ogg video and it has sound.
It seems to be a problem with "sharing" the sound across different players.
Any suggestions for debugging further are welcome.
Those vids play fine here on SUSE Linux 11.3 in both Fx 3.6.12 and 4b7
This is obviously a Ubuntu not a Firefox problem.
What I would do in your position is upgrade Ubuntu. Or, given Ubuntu's poor track record in this area¹ change distro.
