Thunderbird and junk mail

Lynn

I read that "Once a message is marked as junk, it will disappear from the main inbox view and be relocated to the specified junk folder." However, that does not happen. Once I mark a message as spam, it just has a red mark next to it and I have to go to Tools and have it "delete mail marked as spam from folder".

See <Settings | Privacy & Security | Junk> and <Account Settings | (account) | Junk Settings | Destination and Retention>.

You might want to review Thunderbird's other settings in case there are any others you aren't aware of that can adjust the program more to your liking.

I now seem to have it where it is automatically putting spam in the spam folder. It would be nice to then have it automatically delete what's in the spam folder - yet I guess that wouldn't be such a good idea in case something that is not truly spam ended up in there.

If this is an IMAP account, your email provider probably has a retention policy for its Spam folder and will automatically delete them after some period of time (30 days for Google, for example.)

You can set your own retention policy for that folder to be something shorter than the provider. Right-click on the folder name in the Folders List, choose "Properties", "Retention Policy" and choose your settings.

It is indeed an IMAP account. Thank you for all of your help. I've known that Thunderbird existed for years. I have just recently finally tried it and I really like it. Just getting used to it. It's so nice that people like you are willing to help like this - you are appreciated.
