Thunderbird 60.2.1 64bit on Linux Mint 18.3 frequent pause (up to 15 seconds) - cannot change tabs, select messages, or even close the window

Thunderbird seems to freeze or pause frequently, to the point where I cannot change tabs, select messages, or even close the window. The pause lasts up to 15 seconds and seems to happen "all the time" (I hate using that term, but...); I cannot really put any particular timeline on the events, they seem to happen each time I attempt to perform a task, such as closing an email and moving on to the next, or switching tabs, or deleting mail. This behavior began after upgrading to 60.2.1 last week.

I have disabled the add-ons one by one, and have restarted t-bird with add-ons disabled. This has not helped. I do not have an anitvirus program installed. The current add-ons are:

gContactSync by Josh Geenen v3.0.0 Lightning by Mozilla Calendar Project v6.2.2.1 Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher integration by Mike Conley v1.4 Provider for Google Calendar by Phillipp Kewisch v4.4.2
