Every time I try to visit https://se.hbonordic.com/ I get the following error: SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER

I've had a similar issue before, but I managed to solve it by changing some settings in my virus software. But now the error is back, and it only seems to affect the hbo-site.

I changed my virus software without result, but when I tried to open the site in Microsoft Edge I had no issues.

The se.hbonordic.com server doesn't send all intermediate certificates needed to build a complete certificate chain.

  • COMODO RSA Organization Validation Secure Server CA

You can check the server via this website:

You can find a link to this certificate at the bottom of this page:

You can import the certificate in the Certificate Manager.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Certificates: View Certificates

Do NOT set any trust bits when importing the certificate as those are only required for trusted root certificates and should never be set for intermediate certificates.

Firefox automatically stores intermediate certificates that servers send in the Certificate Manager for future use. Stored intermediate certificates show as "Software Security Device" in the "Security Device" column in the Certificate Manager.

A server needs to send the full certificate chain that includes all required intermediate certificates. Firefox automatically stores intermediate certificates that servers send in the Certificate Manager for future use, so if you have visited a website that has send this intermediate certificate in the past then Firefox will not display the error page when you visit a server that doesn't send this intermediate certificate.

If you visit a server that doesn't send a full certificate chain then you will only get an untrusted error if Firefox hasn't yet stored this intermediate certificate because you have visited a server in the past that has send this certificate, but you do get an untrusted error if this intermediate certificate isn't stored yet.

Thank you for your help, but the problem still persists.

When I import the certificate, is the Certificate Manager supposed to notify me that it was correctly imported?

I also visisted this page in the past, without problem. How come Firefox didn't need the certificate then?

No, you would normally not see a notification that a certificate has been imported properly. You can check in the Certificate Manager if you see the Comodo certificate I listed above.

Did you ever used the Refresh feature in Firefox and have created a new profile?

In that case you lose the intermediate certificates stored in the cert8.db file. In that case you can recover these by copying the cert8.db file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
