one of my four email accounts has developed this fault: (TBIRD MAC V. 31.0) when sending an email, as normal, my copy goes to my sent folder. However, if there is an attachment, the email is sent but I do not get a copy of it. TBird "times out" with an error dialog box: "error saving the message to sent.Retry?" (which also fails) This is only happening one the account, Apple / iCloud mail. I have changed nothing in settings. Also, the same email sent from the Mac mail (OSX Mavericks) program - using the same mailboxes - is still working fine. I am confused!

Right click the sent folder and select compact. My guess is the folder is almost full and attachments push it over the limit.

Sorry Matt, did not help. illustration: I composed an email in Mac Mail program with a small attachment, and sent it. No problem. Copy in Mail "sent" folder. THIS THEN APPEARS IN TBIRD's "SENT MESSAGES" folder on startup (of TBird) That is, imap://my-address@imap.mail.me.com/Sent%20Messages I then sent the same email in TBird, with same attachment and to same address. Mail is sent, (and received) but no copy is saved, as I said above. Mails sent with no attachment DO get saved in the "sent" child folder, that is, imap://my-address@imap.mail.me.com/Sent Normal behavior would be for all my messages to be saved there. What on earth happened?!
