Often, though not always, when I open THUNDERBIRD I'm not able to delete or move messages. I need to close the program and reopen. Similarly, when sending emails, sometimes things works smoothly and sometimes they hang up on saving to the SENT box. Apparently they DO get sent but I can't keep a copy. If I close and reopen, then it works as it should.

I'm running Windows 8.1, AVAST internet security, and Thunderbird 24.3.

Okay. Pulling the AV off of Thunderbird's inbox (Profile) seems to have pretty much taken care of the issues. It hung up once ... but that's after a few hours so I'm satisfied. Thanks again, Alice.

This is a Firefox forum. The Thunderbird forum is here:

jimgrapek, Sorry for the confusion.

Thunderbird Support is in the process of being migrated from getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging to here, so your question is in the right place. See Get community support.

If you still need help, or if you solved the problem, please post back and let us know.

Thanks, Alice, I'm disabling various plug-ins to see if that corrects the problems. Should know shortly.  ;)

Nope. That didn't do it. Thunderbird still locks up after ten or fifteen minutes for some reason.

I suspect it happened after one of the Windows updates though can't be sure. I could disable AVAST and reinstall AVG to see if that might make a difference if you know of any issues with AVAST. Otherwise... my 'fix' for the moment is to keep closing and reopening Thunderbird. When first opened everything seems to work fine. J.

Jim, Hopefully one of the Thunderbird experts will be along soon (I don't use Thunderbird) but before uninstalling Avast you may want to check the Avast forums to see if other Windows 8 users are reporting Thunderbird issues. I did a search there and found:

I also found the following, in case it helps:

Wow, you're good. I'm going to see I can get my fancy AV software to skip over my inbox and it seems like that should do it. Thank you!

You're welcome.

Glad I was able to point you in the right direction.

Alice, In the email messages to notify about a reply, why is the subject showing the name of the author of the message rather than the title of the thread? I found that a lot more useful in the Mozilla Messaging Forum.

finitarry, I agree that support forum notification emails should be more relevant to the question asked but the best place to bring that up would either be in the recently filed bug 980805.... or in /forums/contributors

P.S. I just posted comments in the bug report and in /forums/contributors/710031#post-57965
