Upgraded from v91 to v102 of Thunderbird on Windows and Linux - can't download new messages on Imap account
When the upgrade from v91 to v102 came for my Windows 10 desktop, I said, "Go ahead!" After restarting the client, Tbird would go to check new messages and would just keep spinning in its progress area without downloading new messages - which I knew were there. Eventually I had to downgrade back to v91, which thankfully worked well.
I have a Ubuntu 20.04LTS desktop that my partner uses. It was going along fine with v91 but v102 came last night and I didn't notice in the list of packages to be upgraded until it was too late. Now they have the same problem! I haven't downgraded yet since the process will be a little more involved in Ubuntu and I would like to solve the underlying problem so I can keep upgrading to newer versions without worry in the future.
There is a wrinkle to my problems in that both setups are a little unconventional. My mail host eschews passwords in favor of SSH keys. What I've had to setup - and it's been working for about 15 years or more - is an SSH tunnel via an xinetd service. On my Windows box I use Cygwin and for Ubuntu I just use regular old bash and the services directly. When I encounter this new problem upon loading Tbird, I can telnet to my custom port on localhost and see that the connection is being made to the remote IMAP server. I can even list things with a little manual interaction. I really have no idea why it is not working.
I have a wireshark recording from when my Windows installation stopped working, but I would be hesitant to share too many personal details on a public forum.
My mail host/server is using Ubuntu's uw-imapd version 8:2007e~dfsg-3.2ubuntu1 (from Ubuntu 22.04.1).

FYI, It's approved for the next beta release 107.0b4 here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1798161#c9 It appears to be marked also for "uplift" to the next 102 point release but it's not there yet. So, if you could try the next beta and report your results at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1798161 it might speed it along.

Another data point - I configured Evolution 3.36.5 to run and it downloads new messages without an issue. Seems to definitely be an issue with Thunderbird 102(.2.2) and my UW IMAP connection.
Anyone with any thoughts?
I've been working on TB for about 5 years and you are the 1st user I've run across using UW server and PREAUTH via SSH. AFAIK, nothing has changed between 91 and 102 that would cause your problem, but obviously something has.
Thanks for the 3 part log above. Looking at it, it appears the folder discovery is in progress as it should but the log just stops. Not sure if you just didn't include more or if TB actually crashed.
Maybe I can set up my local Dovecot or Cyrus test server to simulate your setup: PREAUTH and connection via SSH tunnel. I'll give it try. But it might be easier to duplicate your issue if you could provide me a temporary test account on your server. If that's possible you can send the required credentials to me via email.
Thanks for replying. It's not my server so I don't know if I can get outside access granted. I only stopped logging because I didn't want the file to get huge. As it was, I had a hard time posting what I had to this forum. Thunderbird, however, just spins and spins where it graphically indicates its progress - doesn't crash and I can still poke through my folders and look at older messages that had been previously downloaded before the upgrade. I don't think it's really doing anything else under the covers. And it's the same behaviour for Windows and Linux (using the same SSH setup as well). v91 is still working fine on my Windows box after I downgraded. I've temporarily switched to Evolution 3.36.5 on the Linux box which works fine with my setup, but isn't as nice to use as Thunderbird.
Ok, good to know not completely crashing. Actually, I did make a recent change that might cause your issue and I may not have considered PREAUTH. I need to look closer. I'll let you know what I find and I'll file a bug report on if I find something.
Yes, I able to duplicate the bug using the dovecot server and its "imap" utility that does PREAUTH on the account but only talks stdin/stdout. I used ncat to produce a socket so I could connect and run TB. It does exactly what you describe.
I've submitted a bug report, with an attached preliminary patch, here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1798161 The preliminary patch fixes the PREAUTH problem but I need to check few more things.

So, with the Win64 "try" - you said it could run alongside. Does this mean it will allow me to install it in an alternate directory and just not overwrite anything that exists from my running v91 installation?
Yes,that is true. It will prompt you for a location to install to in "Program Files" directory. It will probably have the word "Daily" somewhere in the sub-directory name it chooses, not sure. Once it's installed and you run it by clicking the new "daily" icon, it will probably just use your existing profile. Not sure if it will try to create a new profile but you may want to to avoid affecting your current profile. If that's a concern, before you start the try build the first time, you should change the command the shortcut uses and add a -p parameter like this: "...\thunderbird.exe -p" so that when you run daily it will ask you which profile to use and you can create a new one if you want. If you just want to use your existing profile you can just select it and run. (The -p just means show the profile manager before TB runs. Without the -p it will just use your default/last used profile, so you may not need it at this time if you just want to use your last working profile.)
I don't have a windows setup right now so I'm just going by memory.
If you stay with the same profile and go back to 91 after running daily, you will be required to create a new profile. To avoid that requirement, you will need one other parameter on the shortcut command called --allow-downgrade. So above where I suggested added the -p, you should probably just added both parameters like this: "...\thunderbird.exe -p --allow-downgrade" Without the --allow-downgrade, when you go from a higher to lower TB version and try to use the same profile you have to create a new profile. Of course, the --allow-downgrade is not needed if you create a new profile to test the "try/daily" build.
I loaded the Windows version of Thunderbird Daily and it seemed to be able to pick up new messages. Thanks.
If possible, please post back to this thread when the patch is incorporated into an official release and what that version is so I know it will be ok to upgrade my existing packages.

FYI, It's approved for the next beta release 107.0b4 here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1798161#c9 It appears to be marked also for "uplift" to the next 102 point release but it's not there yet. So, if you could try the next beta and report your results at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1798161 it might speed it along.

Interesting that v.102.5 upgrade should solve the same problem that it created for me. The day (Nov 16th 2022) I installed it was the day my desktop's imap downloads from Gmail stopped. (They still come to my phone.) I've been unable to restart them. One fix suggested was to use the "repair" option to clear the inbox folder of possible obstructions. Tried that, and it deleted all the inbox contents from my hard drive, and continued to deny me the download option to replenish them. Other posts suggest that the usual suspect, my Avast anti-virus (which has taken command of my Win 7 firewall) may be ignoring its explicit approval of TBird downloads--perhaps seeing the upgrade as a suspect new program. Unfortunately I can't temporarily disable Avast--only uninstall it.
I recall reading (somewhere in these threads) that this might be solved by creating a new TBird email account to receive the same mail alongside the account that cannot. (Seems unlikely to fool the hidden blocker setting.)
Windows Firewall corrections might work if I uninstall the AV program, but Firewall's a vast maze of menus with thorough but obscure instructions for dozens of fiendishly interrelated potential fixes. Way above my nerd skills. An alternate email client is unappealing. None have the heft of TBird--which is also neurologically hardwired by decades of habit.
ss, Sounds like probably an unrelated issue. What happens when you select Inbox and click "Get Messages" button. Any errors reported at bottom of screen or in "activity manager" or maybe in error console? Don't know what else to tell you without more info like maybe an IMAP:5 log described here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging. You may want to open a new bug at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org and attach the resulting log file there since this forum has limit (or no?) file attachment capability.
