I've been happily using Thunderbird for email for many years. Recently, the gmail OAuth2 requirement has made my POP3 accounts quit working. Currently on 38.5 for Windows 10.

Following various posts, I've tried to convert two specific email accounts to imap, and things are not going well.

My primary email is already imap and works fine. I've tried multiple times to convert the other two, and my current state is I've deleted those two accounts entirely (via Account Actions). When I try to install Existing Account, I eventually get to the point where the server config seems correct, but hitting "Done" results in the above message. I'd be surprised if imap.gmail.com can only support one email address. The emails are named differently, and use different passwords. Imap is enabled via browser based access to both accounts.

I think I've got my TB working again. I tried so many things that I've lost track, but basically, I uninstalled TB, deleted the profiles.ini, re-installed, created the account from scratch, and then moved my old Local Folders back via the Local Folders/Setting screen. I may have lost some messages that predate changing to imap (2011), but I have the old profile folders and can probably find a utility to open TB files if the need arises.

I really didn't like the webmail alternative since you can't open multiple instances of Chrome at different screen locations without multiple profiles. Constantly re-opening Chrome, resizing, etc. One window for tabbed email accounts, and other windows for general use.

I don't doubt your intelligence; Gmail's requirement of Oauth has caused, and continues to cause, frustration with many users. That topic is what most posts here are about. Possibly, if you post screenshots of your server settings it may show something. I feel your frustration. In fact, I share it. But I've seen several go days and days, trying to get Oauth working.

Don't forget that my primary email was working perfectly until I upgraded to 91.10.0. I haven't messed with any server settings for years.

I've attached the inbound server page, the outbound server page, and a peak at the popup I get after signing into Google, responding to a phone notification, and hitting "allow". I tried many times to capture the whole message, but the act of taking a screen shot dismisses the error. If I try again, it just makes me go through the whole Google/phone/allow process. I can take a picture with my phone and provide the entire message if that's needed.

Unfortunately updating directly from Thunderbird version 38 to a current version will bypass various migration code. One of them is the password store.

I suggest visiting the Saved Passwords in Settings under Privacy & Security, and removing all entries related to the accounts for which you are having trouble, including oauth tokens (which start with "oauth://...").

My password store is totally empty.

I'm still failing to get my primary email to work since the upgrade from 38.5 to 21.10.

One slight mystery, that makes me think there's a cache or something, is that despite incoming and outgoing servers being imap.gmail.com and stmp.gmail.com, my error message said authentication failed for "googlemail.com" which is nowhere in any account setting. Maybe Google just re-directs gmail.com or maybe there's something saved somewhere that's the root of my problem.

I'm sorry if I'm being dim here. But did you check that the settings were correct for using the IMAP rather than POP in your Google mail accounts (online/webmail settings) as well as the TB account (client) settings? Mine is still on POP, as that's what I use...

Imap is enabled (and pop is disabled) via webmail access. Bothe servers on the TB side are as recommended in above posts. I'm slowly adapting to having lost use of TB, and the mysterious message about googlemail.com was a last ditch effort to resolve this.

I have the same problem with a empty "~/.thunderbird/"

Steps to reproduce.

``` rm -rf ~/.thunderbird/ ~/Downloads/thunderbird-10x/thunderbird/thunderbird -version
Thunderbird 102.2.2
~/Downloads/thunderbird-10x/thunderbird/thunderbird ```
The account wizard starts get the mail config right but the username is wrong and I can't change the username See the Image. When I presse "Configure manually" and change the username press the done I get the "Incoming server already exists." but there is no server configured
I was now able to catch a error in the error console
``` accountSetup.js:2186 mail.setup: Error Creating Account. [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIMsgAccountManager.createIncomingServer]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: resource:///modules/accountcreation/verifyConfig.jsm :: verifyConfig :: line 86" data: no] ```

After switching back to thunderbird-102.2.1 the account was able to be created. Looks like in the version thunderbird-102.2.2 are some bugs about the about account creation. I hope the Error message above helps you to find the bug
