Check Tools/Account Settings and make sure the authentication method for the incoming and outgoing servers is OAuth2, then restart TB and enter the account password in the OAuth window to allow access.
Hi thank you for replying, yes have checked that a number of times still no change. Have checked Thunderbird has access to google account Have even uninstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird Screen shot of activity manager below Regards
Just updated to 96.6.2 still has same problem.
Post your server settings from Tools/Account Settings, and state the antivirus and VPN, if you have one.
Is this what you were looking for? I'm using AVAST Free Antivirus I don't use a VPN

Yahoo, I disabled Avast and it is all good.
I 'll look further into Avast and see what changed.
Something so simple.
Thank you so much for your help
Kind Regards Bruce
I had this problem too (Thunderbird 102). Not only with imap but also pop3.
Under settings I noticed passwords were not saved. I reinstalled multiple times (rebooted pc), disabled firewall, added thunderbird as permitted app, disabled Windows Defender, and tried all advice on the internet like removing pkcs11.txt (that wasn't recreated)
Finally: - I removed Thunderbird, rebooted. - I moved all files (NOTfolders) from the profile folder to a backup folder 'OLD' - EXCEPT the file prefs.js .
- Then reinstalled, probably rebooted, - Started Thunderbird and somehow Thunderbird re-populated the profile folder with the right files. Passwords are saved again and authentication works.
Maybe an expert knows how this could have worked, but I just wanted to add this to the solutions already out there. I suppose some files got corrupted. I have the profile folder in a custom location (for years already).
I should also have kept - abook.sqlite (address book) - and maybe more.., but for now I can copy those from the backup folder 'OLD' and restart TB
