Thunderbird does not put deleted mails in deleted folder

Thunderbird recently started giving me a message asking to let Thunderbird permanently delete mails, bypassing the deleted folder. I did not say yes, but the message disappeared and now Thunderbird permanently deletes a mail when I press the delete button. This is a disaster as I often accidentally delete mails. How do I correct it? If I cannot rectify this, I will have to look for another email program.

I think you best quote the message verbatim. I really thing it is offering to purge already deleted mail (compact) not delete anything at all.
