Installed Thunderbird 78.6.0 on Windows 10 stable. Everything operates correctly with Gmail, but the Thunderbird application is incredibly laggy.

Opening a message takes a second or two before it opens. Ditto replying and many other operations that should be instantaneous. Some operations take so long that Windows reports the app is not responding. I can post a video if that is helpful and supported here.

Overall it just feels really slow and unresponsive. I researched optimizations but didn't see any that would apply to me.

Any suggestions to improve performance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

What is the antivirus, and its settings for scanning mail and secure connections? The TB profile folder should always be added as an exclusion or exception, and scanning of secure connections disabled. Avast/AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and ESET are known to degrade performance. Run Windows in safe mode to test the effect of startup apps.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using the Windows Defender antivirus that comes with Windows 10.

I also use Mailbird and Outlook for email (not at the same time, obviously), connecting to the same and other Gmail accounts via IMAP. None of those apps exhibit any lag, so I assume it's not an antivirus problem.

You're probably right, but just the same, I would add the profile folder as an Exclusion in WD settings.

This article suggests other possible causes of performance lag, such as Windows search indexing, background online backups, incompatible add-ons etc. It's well worth going through the steps to isolate the cause or causes.
