I transferred my profiles from Win 8 to Win 10 without a hitch. Copy/Paste in roaming folder.

I then tried to transfer from a win 7 profiles to a new laptop Win 10 but it does't recognize anything.

I deleted the new Thunderbird folder and THEN pasted the old Thunderbird folder but it still didn't work.

Any thoughts? Any programs out there that do it automatically?

Thank you, CFJ

Thanks so much for the help.

After I posted the detailed description, and before I saw your response, I fixed it myself :-)

I checked the version of Thunderbird on Win7 and it was 68.8.1. (32 bit)

I then went to Mozilla & downloaded Thunderbird version 68.8.1 (64 bit) and installed it on the new Win 10 laptop. It installed without a hitch, and I opened it up. I clicked on the three lines, went to troubleshooting to open up the location where the "Thunderbird" folder is located. I closed Thunderbird and then deleted the folder "Thunderbird". I then put the "Thunderbird" folder from Win7 into the new location and then opened up Thunderbird and it worked PERFECT. Even the tabs I had open were STILL open LOL

Thanks again for the help. Have a great day. CFJ

What exactly does this mean?

For any folder action you did, please provide the exact full path including the folder name, for both, the Win7, and the Win10 computers.

So sorry for not being clear. Let me start over in detail.

I have 3 laptops. One laptop was windows 8.1 and one is still Windows 7 and I bought a new laptop and installed Win10.

First I backed up the Win8 Thunderbird folder & then installed Win 10. I copied the "Thunderbird" folder in the user/appdata/roaming folder. Thunderbird worked perfectly with all accounts & emails intact.

Then I did the exact same thing with the "Thunderbird" folder from windows 7 laptop into the new laptop with Win 10 with a fresh copy of Thunderbird. When I opened Thunderbird up for the first time, it says:

"You have launched an older version of Thunderbird

A newer version of Thunderbird may have made changes to your profile which are no longer compatible with this older version. Use this profile only with that newer version, or create a new profile for this installation of Thunderbird. Creating a new profile requires setting up your accounts, calendars and add-ons again."

It has "exit" or "create new profile" as options.

Hope I made it clear this time. Thank you for trying to help. CFJ

With Thunderbird 68, in the command line in the Thunderbird program directory, start with

thunderbird.exe -P --allow-downgrade
