15 years ago I created an email account at Wildblue.net. A few years back they migrated to GMail with a custom interface. I can't change my email address because if I cancel, my address goes away, which locks me into their satellite service. Yesterday I created an Out Of Office message with their webmail. I discovered that the Out of Office message worked about once every 20 messages. So I found out how to use a Thunderbird template to create my own Out of Office. A link to the answer is below. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1073671 One thing that I will add is the Reply With Template option will not show up in the Message Filter until you have created at least one Template.

Here are the steps to create a template, First, create a new email (shortcut <ctrl> N). Leave the TO: field blank. Type in the Subject: Out Of Office. Type in the message you wish to reply with. Click File, Save As, Template.

Then create your Message Filter. To create the filter, click Tools, Message Filter, New. Create a Filter Name (Out of Office), check Manually run, check Getting New Mail, select Filter After Junk Classification. Select Match All Messages. Pull Down Reply With Template. Pull Down name of template to use.

As long as the computer is on, you will reliably send out Out Of Office messages. I will also be using it to notify people to use our new email address.

Most "server side" out of office systems send one and one only reply stating that you are not there per email addrerss so if I send you 20 email they send me only one message about you being out of office, the first time I email you.

Thunderbird's message filter can act like a spam engine replying to each and every email it receives. This can be truly a mess on mailing lists that send out a message to everyone. You end up replying to your own mailing list post saying you are out of the office and from there it gets truly silly. and other list members get truly angry.

I suggest you check exactly what the server side one is doing. It might only be replying to those email addresses it has not sent a message to before. Hence the 1 in 20 you mention.
