I don't know what was just implemented, but this new tab thingy is a BOMB!!. I was minding my own business, heavy into researching something when BAMB! New tab thing. - preset search settings-taken over, -searches now feel very googlish-"heres stuff we think you should look at" (no, I don't use G...), the returns are decidedly different than they were an hour ago... - no access to the settings menu- refuses to open. -Who knows what other settings are now changed? Can't get to any of them to even know. If this can't be fixed id rather use a txt browser.

Make it go away! Give me back my controls. Don't be like those other guys and try and decide what we need to see and buy. I have work to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi helmut_s, your Firefox identified itself as the Extended Support Release of Firefox 52.

ESR doesn't get any feature changes during its lifetime, just some security updates, and your browser data doesn't show any add-ons, so it's a mystery what is on your new tab page. Could you get the address from the Page Info dialog. Either:

  • right-click (one button mouse: Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info

On the General panel, triple-click the URL to the right of Address to select it, then either Ctrl+c to copy it, or right-click>Copy, and you can paste it into a reply. Of course, if it says about:newtab that is the built-in page, so it would be peculiar if it had new content on it.

If the problem is on Firefox 57 instead of Firefox 52 ESR, you can revert the "Activity Stream" design to the old design:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled preference to switch the value from true to false

If that doesn't make any difference:

One possible culprit would be an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs to support its own features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious? If in doubt, disable.

Any improvement?
