I have setup an email account on Thunderbird using the default setting. It appears to work however I intermittently receive error messages stating "Login Failure" retry, enter new password or cancel. None of the options work and I close Thunderbird and open it again and it's fine for a while.

How frequently do you see this? Also how frequently is Tbird set to re-pull down new emails and same for your mail provider?

Hi Corey, I had the problem when I logged on this morning but after closing and opening thunderbird, it's been fine (over 2 hours). The account is set to check for messages every 10 mins. but I'm not sure about the provided which is BT.

I don't have anything positive to offer, but some personal experiences. I too use bt as my ISP. Their email has always been a least-effort affair, subcontracted out to a third party. It's as if they see email as a necessary evil of being an ISP. They don't provide any news servers nor any user webspace as part of their standard deal. What they do seem to see as important are expensive sports sponsorship deals and streamed tv services (at additional cost). They even sell set-top boxes to facilitate streaming to the tv set.

Their email is largely managed by Yahoo. Yahoo is very low on my list of providers I would trust with my email traffic. So the combination of bt and Yahoo is a non-starter in my book. A couple of years ago we were told that the email was changing to another provider. For a short period I was able to use my bt email account via "critical path" but this switchover seems to have stalled or foundered. I believe that new accounts are still set up on Yahoo.

My bt email logins are also erratic and unreliable. Since all my non-bt accounts in Thunderbird do not have this problem, I put it down to the provider, and think that there is nothing you can do in Thunderbird to repair a broken provider. If you can, disentangle yourself from bt email. I suppose that if you're paying extra for a business grade service then you do deserve a better level of support and there should be a free helpdesk and phoneline. But I wouldn't be too optimistic about their willingness or abilty to help with Thunderbird. Remember, they want you to use webmail where you are more likely to see the adverts.

Hi Zenos, I have used BT for some years and not had any problems though it's not my main email account and therefore doesn't get a lot of traffic. My problem started with the demise of support for Hotmail in Windows Live Mail. I moved my two accounts over to Thunderbird and that’s when the BT login error started. My account, when the BT account was on WLM was a POP account and now on Thunderbird it’s a IMAP account as I was told this was best. I might try deleting the BT account and putting it back in as a POP account to see if it makes any difference.

I have the same problem using BT IMAP - whilst navigating through email folders I often get a login failure message. Clicking retry just re-displays the same message. The only way to clear it is to click cancel then exit and restart Firefox. I've always had this problem since I switched to Thunderbird over a year ago. I believe my IMAP settings are correct. I attach a screenshot of logging messages which occur at the time of the error. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
