Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away? Please reply to let us know results.
Thank you for replying. I did start Windows 8 in safe mode yesterday but the app still would not launch. I didn't try starting Thunderbird in safe mode though. I will give that a try.
I tried to get safe mode by holding down the shift key and opening the application and it only gave me an error code. It said that the instruction at 0x00981a44 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program.
System restore can sometimes help. But it also might mess things up.
Please download and reinstall from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

Microsoft trouble shooter is saying that this version of Thunderbird in incompatible. Is there anyway that I can undo the update?

Is this what you get when trying to start Thunderbird in Windows safe mode?
Either way, that information, that THunderbird is incompatible, isn't accurate. With Thunderbird shut down, delete the Thunderbird PROGRAM directory aka install directory http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory (not the profile directory, where data is kept)), restart Windows, and reinstall from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
