I have been getting more and more familiar with the about:config settings. On an almost daily basis, I head there to reset the browser.newtab.url. It works to return the page, but when I do a reboot (or my computer does it for me while updating), it goes blank again. This was going on for a while, then my browser was hijacked by Yahoo. I used the conventional way of changing it, and that failing, began looking at the about:config settings. I noticed a lot of things set to Yahoo. I tried to reset them to my home page (google) to no avail.

I'm wondering if there is just some general problem with Mozilla/Firefox keeping any settings I give it. Once-upon-a-time I used to use Google as my home page and newtab page. That setting stopped sticking. I liked Mozilla to open to my homepage, but now it just opens to the pages that were open when I last close it. I'm beginning to feel that it has a mind of it's own!!!

This article lists a number of reasons that settings might not stick: How to fix preferences that won't save.

In your More System Details, it shows you have a user.js file in your settings folder (Firefox profile folder). It's an optional settings file that sometimes is created/updated by external software. For some reason, one of the things that often shows up in there is a preference to restore your previous session just once. However, because Firefox uses user.js to override your normal settings every time it starts, that then turns into a permanent change. The above article lists how to track down and remove the user.js file.

Users also have reported that some utility or security software that has a feature to prevent unwanted browser changes actually rolls back their intentional changes. Advanced SystemCare can do this, and probably others. If you're checking the settings, this might be called "home page protection" or something similar.

Hopefully this will reduce the problems.

After you do the above;

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
