I have found that Thunderbird had long 'pauses', with the message "Not responding", while being in use, and it is very frequent I am suspecting that the amount of emails may have grown too many , over the years, and would like to take folders of emails 'off-line', or excluded. But not deleted, so that I can still 'add them back to Thunderbird', at will ?

I doubt your issue has anything at all to do with volume of mail and everything to do with errant security software. Most commonly anti virus products. What do you use?
