FF21, Win7Prox64, when I visit some sites, e.g. Slate.com, the screen flickers as the page loads and also when I scroll; how do I stop this?

I'm using FF21 and Win7Prox64. I have no add-ons installed, and I've disabled hardware acceleration. Oddly, when I start FF in safe mode, this behavior stops. But when I reset and do nothing to configure the various options, it persists.

Hello riderz49, check your extensions also, in safe mode all extensions are disabled.

thank you

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

In the same part of the advanced options where you find hardware acceleration is a checkbox for "smooth scrolling." You might try turning that off as well, even though it sounds as though it would help with this problem...

This might be indicated in one of the above articles, but just in case...

A second acceleration-like feature was added to Firefox, which is not toggled by the checkbox in Options. To cover both features, you can do this.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste gfx and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click gfx.direct2d.disabled to toggle its value from false to true (it should turn bold; this one is toggled by the checkbox in Options).

(4) Double-click gfx.content.azure.enabled to toggle its value from true to false (it should turn bold).

You usually need to restart Firefox before this takes effect.

This probably has no bearing on your scrolling issue, but your PDF plugin is quite old. Can you update? One way is from inside your Adobe product (Reader or Acrobat), using Help > Check for Updates.

I know safe mode disables extensions. When I manually disable extensions, the problem persists. Safe mode, it's OK.

Safe mode must do something more than just disable extensions.

Altering the "gfx" config entries, has no effect on the problem.

Disabling hardware aceleration and fast scrollng has no effect.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

New profile doesn't solve the problem.

The only thing that has solved the problem so far has been safe mode.

Are you sure that you have disabled hardware acceleration properly and restarted Firefox?

Did you check the layers.acceleration.disabled pref on the about:config page to make sure that it is set to true?

I've disable hardware acceleration and restarted.

The layers setting is set to true.

I've even gone so far as to reinstall the OS and all my essential software. When I start FF for the first time, it seemed as though the problem was fixed. But when I quit and restarted, without making any other changes, the problem was there again.

I've used FF for years without problem and I've made no recent changes in add-ons or in the configuration. This is very frustrating.
