webpage html seized control of Firefox 3.6.13 and could not close tab or any other navigation away from page. looking for add-on to block hostile take overs.

I followed a link from a Google search, but ended up on a hostile web page. It indicated my computer was compromised and offered "security" scan. No, I didn't click on anything on the page, but I could not close the tab, go back, or stop the page loading. I'm looking for Firefox settings or add-ons that will prevent this type of hostile take over of Firefox.
