When I click a link either form a web page or from an email I get a whole new window rather than a new tab in the existing Firefox window. This new window is stripped back without the usual menu of options at the top. Is this EDGE taking over my life? I have Firefox as my default browser.

That sounds like a popup window. You can block all popups by clearing dom.popup_allowed_events in about:config.

You can also look at these prefs on the about:config page:

  • Normal Links: browser.link.open_newwindow => 3
  • JavaScript Links: browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction => 0
  • External Links: browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external => 3
