On browser startup, multiple windows open automatically.
Since the latest browser update, whenever I startup firefox, the same multiple windows (1 webpage per window) open everytime. A window will open and then close automatically and follow the same sequence until all 8 windows open. I've tried deleting the user.js file but this problem still remains. It's very annoying.

Please consider turning on send info to Mozilla before posting a question. This helps us help you.
Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run a disk/file cleanup. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved.
Reinstall Current Release Firefox 56.0.2 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
If the issue persists we will work on your Profile

Could you please modify your instructions for a mac? I forgot to mention that.

Instructions would be the 2 main install folders root of C:\ This should be easy to figure out : Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) or use search and find Mozilla Firefox Folders. Then restart system. T hen run a disk/file cleanup. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved.
