Can I configure an incoming server without configuring an outgoing service for my pop3 email?

I would like to make a back up of my emails in a tiscali account before I delete the account. However, I cannot setup the mail account in Thunderbird because I believe the email provider no longer supports smpt unless you are also using them as an internet provider as well. Is there any way to add this account to allow download of incoming emails only, I have no need to send any emails, therefore I do not need the outgoing server. Thanks!

I take it this account isn't already set up in Thunderbird?

You can set up an account using an existing smtp server. It may not actually work (because the owner of the smtp server will probably refuse messages not of his own domain) but you don't intend to send so that won't matter. You may have to switch to manual configuration to get this to go.
