quota 438% after deleting messages

I have spent all day deleting unwanted messages in Thunderbird - but my quota has quadrupled from 102% full to 434% full and I now cannot open my inbox messages. I have emptied the bin...what is happening?

I have spent all day deleting unwanted messages in Thunderbird - but my quota has quadrupled from 102% full to 434% full and I now cannot open my inbox messages. I have emptied the bin...what is happening?

Deleting marks for deletion and hides the messages from view. If you do not compact after deleting you have done nothing to free up space.
