When I click to log into my employers website, https://www.myratner.com I this:

The Lawson Portal does not support this browser: Netscape. Use the Portal Installation Guide to determine the system requirements needed for running the Lawson Portal.

I called my employer's Help desk and they could not walk me through the steps of how to get onto the site. They told me I could access the information I need from work. I would like to have access from home without having to download or use Internet explorer. Can you help me?

Sorry, it looks like that login page is using real old web page coding that was created to specifically use Internet Explorer. Any "browser sniffing" script that refers to "Netscape" is over 10 years old and suspect. Their company, their choice of browser compatibility. But, hey, it's not like you can really remove IE from Windows 7 - it's there on your Windows PC somewhere. It may not be the most up-to-date or most secure version, but it's on your PC and surely up to the task of using that website - in the "compatibility mode" most likely. IE 8 and above may not work correctly on those types of old-design IE-only websites.

You would even have to run current IE versions in compatibility mode because otherwise the user agent isn't recognized as IE.

A look at the JavaScripts that are used by the site doesn't look promising in regard to supporting Firefox as well as a Google search.
